How It Got It's Name
While Giovanni Verrazano and discovered Rhode Island, he was writing a letter and described it as an Island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea. It's name was tossed around and then in March 13, 1644, it was called the Ile of Rods or Rhod-Island and then In 1663 the name “Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations” was adopted.
